CSM

Why does the Scrum Alliance offer a certification program?
When Scrum was first introduced, the only available training was in the form of articles, presentations, and books. By reading these resources, many grasped the iterative nature of Scrum, but missed the principles and practices that are necessary for successful implementation. In response, the Scrum Alliance developed a certification program.
Can I become certified without taking a course?
No. It is our belief that true learning requires hands-on practice and in-person training. The CSM evaluation is not offered as a replacement for formal training.
What does it mean to have a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) designation?
A Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) is someone who has been taught (by a Certified Scrum Trainer) the Scrum terminology, practices, and principles that will enable them to fulfill the role of ScrumMaster or Scrum team member. A Certified ScrumMaster course is a first step on the path to growing more agile. Experience and continuing education are necessary next steps to become a true, practicing Scrum professional. To demonstrate deep understanding and experience with Scrum, CSMs are encouraged to apply for and become Certified Scrum Professionals.
Does the Scrum Alliance offer an online CSM course?
No. While we acknowledge that online seminars can be an effective teaching forum for some subjects, we believe that understanding Scrum requires a greater level of personal interaction than can be delivered in a virtual environment.
The Certified ScrumMaster courses engage participants in live, interactive learning, free from the obstacles inherent in an online activity. Additionally, students of online courses do not have the same opportunity to connect and exchange their perceptions that students in live courses do. There is no virtual coffee break that could replace meeting real people with real experiences. For this reason, online learning has a place in preparing participants for the Certified ScrumMaster course and for passing the evaluation, but is insufficient to fully prepare Scrum participants, which is ultimately the goal of Certified ScrumMaster program.
Do I receive PDU credits for a CSM course?
Yes. Please follow PMI's procedure for Category B: Continuing Education. According to the PMP handbook: 'Contact hours of project and/or program management education may be earned by attending relevant educational courses offered by organizations not registered with PMI. To calculate the number of PDUs earned, use the following formula: one contact hour of learning relevant to project and/or program management within a structured activity or course equals one PDU. Documentation required upon PMI audit/request: registration form, certificate or letter of attendance, and a brochure or course materials outlining the subject matter covered and the qualifications of the instructor/lecturer.' Most CSTs can tell you how many PDUs their course offers.
What is the membership fee?
Our Certified Scrum Trainers pay a $50 membership fee for each student who successfully completes a Certified Scrum Master course. This membership fee covers the cost of the CSM Evaluation and the first two years of membership.
How do I renew my CSM?
This process is currently being developed. For CSMs who have never taken the evaluation, recertification will require that you take the evaluation.
Maintaining your certification not only secures the investment you have already made, but also demonstrates your commitment to retaining competency or even broadening your skills in the practice of Scrum. The Scrum framework is evolving and growing as a result of the engagement and contributions of those who share their ideas and practical experiences in the workplace. Recertification validates your participation in this evolution and your continued proficiency in the fundamental principles and practices of Scrum.
What can I expect from the CSM Evaluation?
The evaluation consists of approximately 35 multiple-choice and true/false questions. You have 60 minutes to complete it. You'll be required to demonstrate your understanding of key Scrum elements, including:
  • Scrum Terminology
  • Scrum Practices
  • Scrum Principles
What is the cost of the CSM Evaluation?
The cost of the evaluation is included in the cost of your CSM course and paid by your trainer. You will pay no additional evaluation fee.
How soon after my course do I have to complete the CSM Evaluation?
After receiving your membership email, you have 90 days to take and complete the evaluation.
How to obtain for CSM certification?
Obtain your CSM certification after completing the course and taking the CSM Test (a link to the test will be sent to you following your course). The test becomes pass/fail on September 1, 2012 and a score of 24 out of 35 questions must be obtained. There will be two free attempts included in your membership and any attempt thereafter will have a charge of $25.
Can I take the evaluation without taking a CSM course?
No. The evaluation is not intended as a substitute for formal training.
What does it mean to be a Certified Scrum Professional (CSP)?
A Certified Scrum Professional has proven experience and expertise in the art of Scrum. CSP is the level of certification that all practitioners of Scrum should strive to attain. Before becoming a CSP, applicants must be CSMs, CSPOs, or CSDs.

Program Management Professional (PgMP)

What is the name of the credential?
The new credential for individuals managing programs is named, Program Management Professional (PgMP®).
Who should apply for the Program Management Professional credential?
The target market is individuals who manage programs. More specifically, the role of a program manager has been defined by the examination specification as someone who can competently demonstrate the following:
  • Under minimal supervision, program managers are responsible and accountable for the coordinated management of multiple related projects directed toward strategic business and other organizational objectives. These programs contain complex activities that may span functions, organizations, geographic regions, and cultures. Program managers build credibility, establish rapport, and maintain communication with stakeholders at multiple levels, including those external to the organization.
  • Define and initiate projects, and assign Project managers to manage cost, schedule, and performance of component projects, while working to ensure the ultimate success and acceptance of the program. Program managers maintain continuous alignment of program scope with strategic business objectives, and make recommendations to modify the program to enhance effectiveness toward the business result or strategic intent. Program managers are responsible for determining and coordinating the sharing of resources among their constituent projects to the overall benefit of the program.
  • Knowledge and skills needed to be effective in both the project and business or government environment, and to make decisions that accomplish strategic objectives. In addition, the program manager should have advanced skills in finance, cross-cultural awareness, leadership, communication, influence, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
Do I have to be a PMP® or a PMI® Member?
No. Candidates do not have to be either a PMI® member or a PMP®.
Can a CAPM apply?
Yes, provided he or she meets the eligibility requirements.
What's involved in getting the credential?
Candidates must successfully complete three competence evaluations:
  • The initial competence evaluation occurs through an extensive application review. This includes a panel of program managers who will look at your work experience. PMI also may select any application for audit to verify any aspect of the application.
  • The second evaluation occurs with the multiple-choice exam in which candidates will be called upon to demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge to a variety of situational or scenario-based questions.
  • The third competence evaluation occurs through the Multi-rater Assessment (similar to a 360 degree process) in which a team of raters that the candidate selects will evaluate the candidate's competence to perform tasks that are pertinent to program management as defined through the examination specification.
Who are the Application Reviewers?
The panel of program managers appointed to serve as the application reviewers for PgMP® credential candidates have been carefully selected by PMI for their extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of program management.
Since PMI appoints these members, there is no formal process available to the public to serve as a volunteer in this capacity.
To protect applicants against any potential review bias, PMI will not provide candidate names from the application to the reviewers.
What is the multiple-choice examination like?
The examination is administered via computer-based testing globally. In areas of the world where computer-based testing does not exist, paper-based testing will be made available.
The examination consists of 170 questions. Candidates will be given four hours in which to complete the examination. Twenty of the questions, dispersed randomly throughout the examination, are pre-test (or un-scored) questions.
Applicants who pass the application review are eligible to take the multiple-choice examination. The eligibility for the examination period is one year.
During the eligibility period, the candidate may take the multiple-choice examination up to three times. Candidates should gauge their time carefully to leave enough time during the eligibility period to retake the examination, if needed. PMI will collect retake fees for candidates making second or third attempts to pass the examination.
Where will the examination be given?
The PgMP® credential examination will be offered globally at Prometric Testing Centers that offer the CAPM® and PMP®examinations as well during normal business hours Monday through Saturday (excluding holidays.) You cannot schedule your examination appointment until you receive your eligibility notification and have submitted payment. Please refer to Prometric's website for more information.
When will the examination specification be available?
The examination specification is being edited and will be made available soon.
Will the examination be available in translations?
Not immediately. Translations will be considered at a future date.
How much time does the Multi-rater Assessment (MRA) take?
During the application submission process, the applicant will provide 12 work-related contacts to participate in the MRA. After PMI receives the candidates passing score for the multiple-choice examination, PMI will automatically begin the MRA process. PMI will send an e-mail containing a link to a web-based competence evaluation survey to the candidate, who performs a self evaluation, and to the 12 reference contacts that the candidate provided on the application. The MRA survey will be available to the invited contacts for three calendar weeks.
What are the eligibility requirements for potential candidates?
Specific eligibility is as follows:
Bachelor's degree, the global equivalent or higher degree Within the last 15 years:
  • Four years (6,000 hours) of project management work experience, AND

What are the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) for this credential?
PgMP® credential holders are required to attain no less than 60 professional development units (PDUs) during each three-year renewal cycle.
Will this new credential dilute the PMP® credential?
No, PMI's credentials reflect different roles, and therefore, different candidates. Please visit the "Which credential is right for me?" section of our website for additional clarification on the difference between the PgMP® and the PMP® credentials.
How will I maintain both credentials if I have a PMP® and attain the PgMP®?
Both the PMP® and the PgMP® are valid for a period of three years beginning the date the credential is granted. To maintain and renew either or both credentials beyond the initial 3 years, certificants must adhere to the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. PMI will align the validity period of the two credentials in order to simplify CCR for the candidate. The PgMP® application allows applicants to choose whether to align the PgMP® expiration with the candidates current PMP® validity dates and share the PDUs already obtained, or to align the PMP® with the PgMP® expiration and thereby begin accruing PDUs for future renewal after the PgMP® is granted. The PMP® credential must be current and in good standing at the time the PgMP® credential is granted in order to align the validity periods of the two credentials.
The credential holder needs to complete an Application for Certification Renewal, remit payment of the renewal fee, and reaffirm the appropriate Code of Professional Conduct.
What is the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program?
In order to satisfy CCR program requirements and maintain an active certificant status, individuals who have attained either the PMP or the new Program Management Professional credential must accrue and report a minimum of 60 professional development units (PDUs) during each 3-year CCR cycle.
The credential holder needs to complete an Application for Certification Renewal, remit payment of the renewal fee, and reaffirm the appropriate Code of Professional Conduct.
For more information on the CCR program and how to report PDUs, please refer to the CCR Handbook.
What is the cost to earn the credential?

Should I do both Certified ScrumMaster and Certified Scrum Product Owner if I don't know where I will be working?
Both designations address different concerns for developing Products. Employers are looking for people with a background in agile (scrum). These designations will help identify you as having been trained in Scrum. Experience still counts so time spent doing Scrum is equally valuable.
In Scrum, which person is the Project Manager? Is it the ScrumMaster or the Scrum Product Owner?
The short answer is neither. The term Project Manager is not defined in Scrum. The term Project Manager is defined broadly in the market and is used differently by many organizations. If you compare the terms side by side you will find that sometimes it is the PO, sometimes the SM and sometimes it is both. Again, the term is not defined in Scrum but, you can compare them.
Which should I pursue: Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO)? Why?
Both certifications will lead to a full understanding of Scrum. The CSPO is targeted for Product Owners who need skills and techniques for managing features and determining what the right product to build is. The CSM is a deep dive introduction to Scrum. CSM is focused on the scrum framework and its application for building well form teams that are directed by a Product Owner. The CSM is recommended for all Scrum team members, this include Product Owners.
Would it be better to spend time renewing a PMP credential or becoming a Certified ScrumMaster or Product Owner?
Becoming a CSM and/or CSPO is recommended. We are seeing increase demand from companies who are looking for people with CSM / CSPO experience.
I understand Scrum is used widely for software development projects. Can it be used for other fields?
Scrum has seen an application into every major vertical industry. The number of domains outside software that it has been applied to is increasing rapidly. Scrum is a general purpose framework that is used to set an empirical pattern of behavior at a small team level. Scaling Scrum is thought of as multiple scrum teams working together in an empirical process controlled manner.
How do I get my certificate and who issues it?
Students taking classes offering a Scrum certification (Certified ScrumMaster and Certified Product Owner) will receive their certifications from the Scrum Alliance. Shortly after completion of the class, participants will receive an email from the Scrum Alliance with instructions for creating a membership account and taking any required certification exams. Once certified, students will have access to exclusive content and the ability to print a copy of any Scrum certificates they have achieved.
What time do classes start and how long do they go each day?
Unless otherwise stated, all of our classes begin at 8:30 and run to 5:00 PM, local time. Classes generally include a break for lunch around noon, as well as a brief break in the morning and afternoon.
What are the benefits of taking a class to learn about Agile & Scrum as opposed to simply reading a book?
Books are valuable resources and we strongly encourage potential students to leverage these sources of information. Our training classes are designed to reinforce concepts with in depth simulations and robust discussion. All of our course blend lecture, practice, and reflection. This allows participants to gain a much more profound understanding of the subject matter.
What do I need to bring to a class?
Our classes are designed to be a stand-alone experience and do not require participants to bring anything to a class other than an open mind and willingness to learn and perhaps something to take notes.
Can I buy a seat with a Purchase Order?
Yes, we will accept purchase orders. Please email us at support@knowledgehut.com to arrange for payment via a purchase order.
What happens if a class is canceled?
In the case that a class is canceled by KnowledgeHut, participants are entitled to transfer to another class or receive a full refund at their discretion.

Hadoop Development & BI

Why is Hadoop popular?
Hadoop's popularity is partly due to the fact that it is used by some of the world's largest Internet businesses to analyze unstructured data. Hadoop enables distributed applications to handle data volumes in the order of thousands of extra bytes.
Where does Hadoop find applicability in business?
Hadoop, as a scalable system for parallel data processing, is useful for analyzing large data sets. Examples are search algorithms, market risk analysis, data mining on online retail data, and analytics on user behaviour data.
Hadoop's scalability makes it attractive to businesses because of the exponentially increasing nature of the data they handle. Another core strength of Hadoop is that it can handle structured as well as unstructured data, from a variable number of sources.
What is Course Pre-Requisites?
The participants should have basic understanding or knowledge of java and linux. Prior knowledge of Hadoop is not required
I have a lot of data, but how do I know if it's "Big Data?"
Every company that has data likely has "Big Data," and it grows continuously. Big Data is any type of data, including structured and unstructured data such as log files, customer service information, retail data, text, database information and so on. All of this data can now be analyzed in aggregate, across types and formats, to help make more informed business decisions and drive new solutions
How much Hands-on is involved?
Around 50% of the training time is dedicated to the Hands-On training. Altogether 11 exercises are lab based.
What platforms and Java versions does Hadoop run on?
  • Java 1.6.x or higher, preferably from Sun - see HadoopJavaVersions
  • Linux and Windows are the supported operating systems, but BSD, Mac OS/X, and Open Solaris are known to work. (Windows requires the installation of Cygwin).
What kind of hardware scales best for Hadoop?
The short answer is dual processor/dual core machines with 4-8GB of RAM using ECC memory, depending upon workflow needs. Machines should be moderately high-end commodity machines to be most cost-effective and typically cost 1/2 - 2/3 the cost of normal production application servers but are not desktop-class machines. This cost tends to be $2-5K. For a more detailed discussion, see Machine Scaling page.

  • Synchronization with SharePoint lists - In Project 2010 Professional, users can export project files to a list in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 or Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010.
  • Manual scheduling - Project 2010 changes how projects are scheduled. Factors such as task dependencies and the project calendar no longer automatically adjust task dates when a task is manually scheduled.
  • Placeholder tasks - Placeholder tasks let users create a plan by using task names only. Users can enter any combination of start date, finish date, and duration and fill in the rest later.
  • Inactive tasks - Users can make tasks inactive and still keep them in their projects. The main value of this feature is that custom field information, resource assignments, and all other data stays in the task.
  • Top-down summary - Creating subtasks and then rolling them up into summary tasks is no longer restricted. In Project 2010, users can create summary tasks first, and the summary tasks can have dates that do not exactly match the roll-up dates of the subtasks.
  • Compare projects - The compare projects feature in Project 2010 now includes Gantt bars to help users see more clearly how one version of a project differs from another version.
  • Timeline - Project 2010 now includes a timeline view. For new files, the timeline view is automatically displayed above most other views. This shows a concise overview of the entire schedule.
  • Enhanced copy and paste - These features lets users copy and paste content between Microsoft Office programs and Project 2010, and keep formatting, outline levels, and column headers.
  • Excel- like features
  • Features similar to those in Microsoft Excel are available in Project 2010. This includes the following: Simplified adding of new columns. A user can click the Add New Column heading at the right end of a sheet view, and then type or select the name of a new or existing column. An existing column can also be quickly renamed by clicking its title and typing a different column name.
Enhanced filter UI makes it easier for users to find tasks and resources.
32-bit color support and text wrapping enable users to create views that are similar to Excel reports.
Find commonly used commands quickly - The most commonly used commands can now be found easily. By right-clicking any item in a view, such as bar, table cell, or chart, a mini-toolbar with a quick list of commonly used commands is displayed.
The view slider - In Project 2010, users can quickly zoom in and out of the time phased section of a view by using a slider in the status bar. Move the view slider to the right to zoom in a schedule and move the slider to the left to zoom out. The view slider works in the Gantt chart, network diagram, calendar, and all graph views.
Backwards compatibility - Project 2010 is compatible with previous versions of Microsoft Project.
