Glass Is Strong, but Women Are Stronger. It’s Time to Shatter the Glass Ceiling.

Gender gaps are estimated to cost our economies a very significant 15% of global annual GDP and this is only set to increase to as much as $28 trillion or 26 percent in 2025.

The foremost underlying factor causing large numbers of women across the world to drop out of the corporate workforce is the burden of caregiving. Statistics indicate that women are apprehensive about resuming their careers after taking a break due to diminished confidence in their skillsets.

Bringing Women Back to Work After Career Breaks

Organizations have a dual responsibility to set up a level playing field for women.

First, they have an obligation to develop an immediate response to the pink pandemic—a coinage referring to this moment in our collective history, where women are being taxed in all spheres of their lives, both personal and professional.

Secondly, there’s a need to focus on long-term, sustainable solutions for women’s development and advancement as leaders.

Roll out Back-to-Work Programs for Returning Women

Back-to-work programs targeting returning women who have been on a career break can be extremely effective, bringing women back for short periods or for fixed projects during which time their skills are determined, and adequate opportunities provided for training. Alternately, women can be offered full-time roles, providing them adequate support to ease into those jobs.

Be Seen as a Company That Is Women-Friendly

Organizations should leverage Employer Branding to make known that they welcome women who have been on a break. Ultimately, it’s the policies that make a workplace conducive for women. It's important for organizations to position themselves as providers of a safe and secure environment.

Don’t Be Rigid in Role Requirements

Managers planning to hire returning women should give leeway for the experience or skills criteria for the incoming candidate. The line manager and recruiter should work together to see what time and training needs to be invested, so that the hire benefits both the company and the candidate.

Be Sensitive to Informal Systems and Behaviours

A ‘broing down’,  testosterone-fuelled culture can deter women from joining, rather than increasing their ranks in an industry that direly needs them.

At KnowledgeHut, we work hard to do the opposite by creating a no-fear culture where everyone feels welcome. We ask all our leaders to imagine themselves in their team members' shoes on a regular basis—and this includes thinking about gender issues.

    Rethink Your Benefits and Incentives

The way to attract and retain more female workers is to think in terms of policies and benefits packages that can help your entire workforce. What women increasingly demand from their employers often aligns with what men want too: a chance for better work-life balance and greater flexibility.

    KnowledgeHut Career Reboot

    When women achieve, everyone wins.

Businesses that work to foster women’s success at the workplace have been found to significantly outperform those that don’t. As per an IBM study, gender-inclusive organizations reported a rate of revenue growth as much as 61% higher than other organizations.

Career Reboot is our initiative at KnowledgeHut to provide a launchpad to women who have taken a break in their careers due to any circumstances. It’s a stepping-stone for women who have been out of the workforce for a significant period and are ready to re-enter.

Through this initiative, we aim to provide training to help women upskill and transition back to work in a meaningful way.

It’s Time to Shatter the Glass Ceiling

    Glass is strong.
    Women are stronger.

Glass takes the shape of its mould.
Women mould their skills, and their possibilities.

    Glass is hard and inflexible.
Women are flexible and highly adaptive.

    Glass is made of sand.
Contrary to popular belief, women aren't just made of sugar and spice and all things nice. They're made of courage.

    Glass shatters and breaks.
    Women overcome.
Which is why women make great leaders.

Whatever the industry, the glass ceiling days are numbered.
Because when you #breakthebias and approach the seemingly impossible with courage,
    It. Becomes. Possible.

If you’re a woman looking to get back to the workforce after a career break, don't miss the opportunity to take advantage of up to 30% off on our training programs with KnowledgeHut Career Reboot.

It’s time to shatter the glass ceiling and #breakthebias.
