1. The Scrum Framework

Learning Objectives:

In this module, you’ll learn to explain the value of agility over traditional project management and dive deep into the five Scrum Values and how they relate to one another.

Topics:

  • Scrum application across industries, domains and contexts
  • The value of agility over traditional project management
  • The five Scrum Values and how they relate to one another
  • Relating hands-on experience with iterative development
  • The value of sharing learnings and insights across teams
  • The product as a vehicle to deliver value for the service or product
  • An example of Scrum or Scrum@Scale

2. The Origins of Scrum

Learning Objectives:

Learn about the origin story of Scrum and how Dr. Sutherland’s experience influenced the various attributes of the Scrum framework.

Topics:

  • How Dr. Sutherland’s experience in making work visible at West Point lead to the transparency emphasized in Scrum today.
  • How Dr. Sutherland’s experience as a fighter pilot has influenced Scrum, particularly responding to change over following a plan.
  • How Dr. Sutherland’s background working as a cancer researcher gave rise to a statistical understanding of which small steps lead to healthier change, and that each small step will open or close doors in the evolution of a system.
  • The OODA loop as it relates to overcoming resistance to change.
  • The significance of the ’2-sword combat’ (e.g., balancing short and long term needs and goals) and ’winning a war without firing a single shot’ (e.g., an Agile transformation without firing a single person) in the context of business.

3. The Scrum Roles

Learning Objectives:

Distinguish the three Scrum roles, identify what each is accountable for, and explain how they work together to balance quality, sustainability, and the creation of business value with a focus on the customer. Describe the benefits of cross-functional teams over siloed teams.

4. Scrum Event: Sprint

Learning Objectives:

Recognize the Sprint as a fixed time-box of one month or less, in which the team produces a “done” Product Increment.

Topics:

  • Sprint as a fixed time-box of one month or less
  • Why have a stable Sprint cadence, especially with regard to Velocity
  • Why shorter Sprint cycles are preferred to longer Sprint cycles
  • No changes that would endanger Sprint Goal

5. Scrum Event: Product Backlog Refinement

Learning Objectives:

Recognize that the Scrum Team should dedicate up to 10% of their Sprint length to refining the Product Backlog.

Topics:

  • 10% of Sprint length to be dedicated to Product Backlog
  • Product Backlog Items (PBIs) can be any size
  • PBIs can be created using a user story format
  • Getting PBIs in a “ready” state
  • ‘Definitions of Ready.’

6. Scrum Event: Sprint Planning

Learning Objectives:

Learn about why the Sprint is valuable, what can be Done in the Sprint, and how the chosen work will get done.

  • How the chosen work will get done
  • Sprint Backlog and the plan to deliver them
  • Product Backlog and the plan to deliver them
  • Sprint Planning time-boxed for two hours (or less) per week of Sprint
  • Real-world examples of each topics covered in Sprint Planning
  • The importance of having a Sprint Goal that’s motivating and achievable.
  • Scrum Master’s role in helping team confirm their capacity and know how much work to pull into the Sprint.
  • Only “ready” PBIs should be pulled into the Sprint Backlog
  • Kaizen, or process improvement experiment, should be at the top of the Sprint Backlog
