DevOps Basics

In simple terms, DevOps is a combination of development and operations working towards increasing an organization’s ability to deliver at a higher velocity, throughout the service lifecycle. It starts from the design stage and includes all the development processes right up to production support. To summarise, DevOps combines the development, testing, and operations to enhance the software quality and the development process.

DevOps aims to improve and change the processes in an organization. Apart from this, other benefits are listed below:

  • Reduced time for development and faster innovations
  • Lesser deployment failures and rollbacks
  • Better communication and collaborations
  • Higher efficiency
  • Less cost and IT headcounts

It is true that DevOps is primarily used in the software industry, but it is now being adopted across other industries as well. Following are a few major industries that are making use of DevOps:

  • Insurance - DevOps helps the industry to achieve timely changes and quicker product deliveries
  • Healthcare - DevOps enables healthcare sector to create Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipelines for their infrastructure automation
  • Manufacturing - DevOps improves the business agility and continuous delivery in manufacturing
  • Banking - The Banking sector uses DevOps to improve customer satisfaction through faster time to market and release cycles.
A DevOps engineer works with the development staff of an organization to solve the coding and scripting needed to join the elements of codes. He/she has to oversee the software development and deployment in mission-critical applications.

A large number of organizations are adopting DevOps as their mainstream strategic tool, and the job opportunities are growing rapidly day by day. According to,  the average annual DevOps engineer salary is around $624,339. Also, according to Statistica report, there was a 17% rise in the adoption of DevOps in the year 2018 and more growth was projected in 2019 as compared to a 10% hike in the year 2017. This will bring larger opportunities and pay scales to the DevOps professionals making the DevOps career path more attractive than ever.

Also, additional skills in operational, communication and analytical areas will increase your value.

DevOps culture features small and multidisciplinary teams who will autonomously work to find how actual users are experiencing their product. These teams work in small batches towards improving the end-to-end delivery of customer value. Most importantly, DevOps culture applies a "growth mindset" for a better result.

  • Customer-centred actions:

Customer’s feedback is very crucial today to develop more improved products in less time. The organizations implementing DevOps should act like lean startups that innovate continuously, update the strategy if it is not working, and bring in such products or services that will attract more customers.

  • Always create with the end result in mind:

DevOps always stresses on developing the high-end product in chunks without rushing to develop a complete product at one time.

  • Responsibility from the very beginning to the end:

In DevOps organizations, teams are fully accountable for product development to product deployment to the customers.

  • Autonomous teams with cross functions:

In a DevOps environment, the teams are self-organized autonomous teams and are cross-functional. They are independent of other team members throughout the complete product development cycle.

  • Continuous improvement:

In a DevOps culture, stress is given on continuous improvement to reduce waste, get optimized speed, minimize cost, and ease of delivery. This also helps in enhancing the team members’ skills.

  • Automation everywhere:

The last principle in DevOps includes product development through automation that provides the base for constructing and managing the infrastructure in an automated way.

Few of the key DevOps practices are listed below-

  • Automated tests:

Codes and the underlying infrastructures are tested in an automated manner instead of testing it manually.

  • Centralised configuration management:

If there are multiple servers and you need to do configuration changes in one file, it is more flexible to automate the process instead of doing it manually.

  • Continuous integration:

The deployment process in DevOps consists of code development, versioning, testing, deployment, etc. DevOps automate these tasks using tools that reduce human intervention in the deployment process.

  • Continuous delivery:

DevOps focuses on continuous delivery to ensure that there are zero bugs in moving the code from production to any other environment.

  • Continuous deployment and versioning:

In continuous deployment, the code is deployed to the production environment automatically, whereas continuous versioning includes that the several versions of the code are available at proper places.

  • Proactive monitoring:

One of the DevOps practices includes monitoring the infrastructure, whether it is on a cloud or on a local data centre.

  • Team Culture:

In DevOps, stakeholders are invited to regular meetings to make everyone aware of the project goals.

  • Data-driven approach:

DevOps is all about continuous performance improvement and in case it is not present, it leads to incomplete development.

  • Centralized log management:

Centralized logs for applications with multiple servers expand the chances of debugging in case there is an outage and set alerts can prevent a huge outage. Logs can be seen as graphs, tables, and pie charts.

  • Centralized dashboards:

Centralized visual dashboards let you view configuration changes made to the servers along with databases and deployments that have taken place.

The DevOps automation is a practice aimed at reducing the manual handoffs, Ops departments and aligning siloed Dev and Ops departments. It is achieved through the use of automation tools in development, test and production environments.

DevOps toolchains are basically a set or combination of DevOps tools that are involved in the delivery, development, and management of software during the systems development life cycle, as facilitated by the DevOps organization. A DevOps toolchain is implemented after the evolution of software development. The DevOps toolchain let you create your team’s toolchain in the cloud which gathers all the best elements of DevOps solution, including:

  • Shared and integrated tooling
  • Automation
  • Self-service for the innovative developer
  • Behind-the-scenes versioning
  • A collaboration that spans the silos between development and operations

Given below are the few crucial metrics that are responsible for DevOps success:

  • Deployment frequency - It is the number of deployments done in a specific time. For a successful DevOps, a higher number of deployments in a shorter period is recommended.
  • Deployment size - Tracking the number of stories, bug fixes, and feature requests that are being deployed is a good DevOps metric.
  • Change lead time - The change lead time is the time required for change such as bug fix. Longer change lead time suggests inefficient processes.
  • Change success or failure rate - Changes must always be smooth and frequent. The failure rate should be kept as low as possible
  • Meantime to detection - As the DevOps processes mature, the MTTD should decrease
  • Service availability - Application runtime is one of the most critical metrics. A usual service availability goal is 99.99%
