PMI’s passing score for the PMP® exam for each aspirant is different. The exam score is determined based on the difficulty level of the set of PMP® exam questions you have answered. PMI uses a scientific approach to determine whether a PMP® candidate is eligible for the PMP® certification. The report card will show the Target level i.e. above Target, Target, Below Target and Needs Improvement.

When you apply for the certification, PMI grants you a 1-year period during which time you are eligible to appear for the exam 3 times. The first attempt at the PMP® exam costs $405 for PMI members and $555 for non-members.

If you fail at the first attempt, you can retake the PMP® exam again at a cost. It is $275 for the computer-based exam for PMI members and $375 for non-members. It is cheaper for the paper-based exam. It is $150 for a PMI member and $300 for a non-member.

If you fail the second attempt, you still need to pay to retake the PMP® exam.

If you fail to pass even after the third attempt, then you are required to wait for 1 full year from the date of your last test attempt before re-applying for the exam.

You might not get a refund if your computer doesn’t meet the required specification.These are the mandatory steps that you need to follow irrespective of your preference for scheduling your PMP® exam within Center-Based Test (CBT) or Online Proctored Test (OP):

  1. Log in to Under the myPMI® section, move to ‘Review Application Status’ and click on ‘Schedule Exam’.
  2. You will be redirected to your Pearson VUE account.
  3. The Pearson VUE page includes a space to enter the name of your testing program. You need to type the PMI® - Project Management Institute in it.

    Note: You need to choose your testing program before scheduling, rescheduling or canceling an exam. If you’re facing any difficulty, feel free to contact a customer service representative.

  4. Or else, you can click on ‘A to Z list of all programs’ which will take you to a list of test sponsors.
  5. PMI® (Project Management Institute) is the test sponsor name for PMP®. You’ll be able to find once you click on ‘P’.
  6. After you find it, click on PMI® - Project Management Institute, you’ll land on a page where you need to log in using your unique PMI® eligibility ID.
  7. In the next step, you’ll have to choose between the Center Based Test or Online Proctored Test option.

If you select CBT option:

Proceed with the below-mentioned scheduling instructions to take up the PMP® Exam (CBT) in Zurich Test Center:

  1. In the next step, you will have to pick the booking method option. Select the ‘I will be scheduled for a future date at a test center’ option and click on Next.
  2. After clicking on Next, you will be asked to review the View Testing Policies. After this, click on Schedule this exam.
  3. Now, you will have to choose the test center, date and time for your PMP® certification exam. You just need to choose your exam center in Zurich and then choose a suitable date and time.
  4. The next step is to review the appointment. Click on Proceed to Checkout.
  5. Once you’re through with the above steps, click on Submit Order to confirm your appointment
  6. You will receive a confirmation mail from Pearson VUE.

If you select Online Proctored Test:

If you choose to take up the PMP® exam in Zurich Test Center through Online Proctored Test,
You need to consider the following steps -

  1. Agree to the online proctoring policies after reading it and click ‘Next’.
  2. The next page comprises of the exam and language aid you have selected. You need to click on ‘View Testing Policies’ and then click on ‘Schedule This Exam’.
  3. In the next step, you need to choose the date and time you wish to take your exam on. However, you do not have to select a location. You can schedule your PMP® exam at any time of the day between Tuesday to Saturday. First, select a date you would like to take your exam on and then the time.
  4. Once you make the selection, you need to review your appointment details and then click on ‘Proceed to Checkout’.
  5. Complete the checkout by following the next steps and then click on ‘Submit Order’.
  6. A confirmation email from Pearson VUE will be mailed to you once your appointment is confirmed.

A fee of $70 will be charged if you cancel your exam within 30 days of your scheduled appointment. You must also note that you have to cancel your appointment before 48 hours of the exam, otherwise, you will lose the entire exam fee.

Although the Project Management Institute (PMI)® has not yet given any updates on Paper-based Testing (PBT), It will work with Pearson VUE on the change of candidates who are scheduled for PBT exam to Pearson VUE test center location on or after 1st July, 2019.

In order to schedule your PMP® exam with Pearson VUE through telephone, follow the given steps -

  • Step 1: The representative at the Pearson VUE’s Contact Center will ask you about your Testing program, which is PMI® or the Project Management Institute. 
  • Step 2: Next, you will have to tell the name of the examination and your PMI® ID. 
  • Step 3: In the End, your name, address, email address, and phone number will be verified. 

To schedule the Test Accommodations, you must have been first verified. Following are the steps to schedule the PMP® Exam with Test Accommodations with Pearson VUE:

  • Contact the Pearson VUE Contact Center.
  • Give the details including the Testing program, name of the examination and your PMI® ID.
  • Following, you will have to verify your name, email address, phone number, and address.

You will receive an email confirming your appointment after you submitted the PMP® Certification fee or complete the PMP® application audit which will also contain the PMI® Eligibility ID.Note- You can also find the PMI® Eligibility ID on the myPMI® section of PMI® website.

  • Visit and under the Review Application status section, click on Reschedule Exam or Cancel Exam.
  • You will be directed to your Pearson VUE account, under the Upcoming Appointment section, click on the exam that you want to reschedule or cancel.  
  • When you review the exam’s current appointment details, you will get an option to reschedule or cancel your exam. 

Note: Remember if the cancellation is done within 48 hours of the scheduled exam, then the entire sum paid will be forfeited.

For the Online Proctor exam, there are a certain system, environment, technical and testing protocol requirements that you must verify  before scheduling an appointment. This is what you need to do:

  1. Running System test
    • Download and run the system in your computer.
    • You need to have a microphone, a working internet connection, and a webcam.
    • You will have to take a one-question exam to check your internet connection.
  2. Review policies and procedures
    Review the policies and procedures for the online proctor exam.

  3. Verify System Requirements
    Verify the system requirements.

You have to submit a request to the PMI® before thirty days of exam eligibility expiration. Once the refund is processed, your application is closed and the eligibility period is terminated.

PMP® Exam & PMP® Renewal

Your PMP® certification remains valid for three years. You can renew the certification by earning PDUs with the aim of fulfilling Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR).

As an integral part of the CCR (Continuing Certification Requirements) it is compulsory that you keep on earning PDUs for the active maintenance of the PMI®. To accomplish this purpose you need around 60 PDUs for fulfilling the requirements of CCR and renewing the PMI® certification.
