An ITIL expert in a company is a valuable asset who can enhance services by giving strategies to control business risk and service interruption, building cost-effective tools to manage service demand, and facilitating business transformations while maintaining a consistent service environment.
The ITIL Expert certification is intended for people who want to become ITIL best practices experts. The route to becoming one begins with the Foundation level and progresses to the Practitioner and Intermediate levels, which qualify the applicant to seek the Expert level certification.
Read this article to know how to become a certified ITIL expert.
What is ITIL?
ITIL was developed in the 1980s by the United Kingdom's Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) as a framework of defined best practices for IT operations used in government entities. ITIL has evolved from a tightly focused beginning to a complete system for developing IT service delivery in firms and organizations of all sizes, across all markets and business sectors.

For organizations that rely on complex computer resources to keep their operations running and generate money, IT has evolved into a mission-critical service delivery mechanism. ITIL enables businesses to create and implement a documented, repeatable process that helps them stay focused on the big and minute elements of launching new IT services and then monitoring them.
The ITIL service lifespan is divided into five practice areas or stages, each with its own set of underlying guiding principles, rules, and procedures:
Service Strategy:
This phase is concerned with identifying services as strategic assets, maintaining and implementing a consistent, purposeful strategy. The concepts of service strategy encompass business operations, corporate management and governance, standards, organizational value, decision-making, and ensuring that the firm is orientated toward service improvement.
Service Design:
This phase entails evaluating business management procedures to design and develop new service offerings or enhance current ones.
Service Transition:
The transition from development to production operations, including assessment and quality assurance, is covered in this phase.
Service Operation:
This stage specifies how to administer services once they are in use. It focuses on service operation activities including event planning, access management, problem management, the application lifespan, and helpline assistance.
Continuous Service Improvement:
Based on operational input and service levels, this phase establishes new needs for the prior stages of ITIL. It assists in ensuring that standard procedures are enforced, terms of the agreement are reached, and operational knowledge gained are integrated into existing and anticipated service enhancements.
How to Become a Certified ITIL Expert?
ITIL was taken over by Axelos in July 2013. It is currently in charge of maintaining the ITIL framework and accrediting training and testing centres. There are hundreds of ITIL Accredited Training Organizations (ATOs) available to conduct training, and ITIL certification examinations can be delivered at the end of a training course or by an Examination Institute (EI), most of which collaborate effectively with the ATOs.
ITIL certification comes in five levels:
Level 1: ITIL Foundation
The ITIL Foundation certification is an entry-level certification and offers a comprehensive set of ITIL. This is where most newcomers begin their ITIL study and certification journey. There are no qualifications for this certification, so anybody with an interest in this area can take it. Test preparation for the ITIL Foundation certification exam can be done in a classroom setting, over the internet, or by self-study. You can enroll for the online ITIL foundation certification training course before sitting for the Foundations test.
Level 2: ITIL Practitioner
ITIL Practitioner is the most recent addition to the ITIL certification framework. The first time this exam was administered was in February of 2016. The ITIL Practitioner certification is focused on a practical understanding of ITIL procedures and how those concepts are applied in the real world, as the name suggests. An ITIL Practitioner can demonstrate how to apply the ITIL plan to implement business goals, with an emphasis on business transformation, communications, and assessment and metrics.
After completing the ITIL Foundation, the ITIL Practitioner is the next phase in the ITIL development. It highlights an organization's capacity to adapt, adapt, and utilize ITIL ideas. Although the Practitioner certification is not necessary for higher-level ITIL certifications, it does contribute three credits toward the ITIL expert certification. Self-study, in-person classroom learning, and online ITIL expert training program choices are all the options available to help you study for the Practitioner test. The Practitioner test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, with a passing score of 70%, or 28 right answers.
Level 3: ITIL Intermediate
Each module of the ITIL Intermediate certification focuses on a distinct topic of IT service management. Service Lifecycle and Service Capability are two categories for relevant modules.
AXELOS allows applicants to acquire credentials in one area or by selecting modules from both categories, allowing them to fulfil their own professional goals. You should have at least two years of IT service management experience, according to AXELOS. You must take an ITIL 4 expert training course offered by a recognized training institution to complete your Intermediate test preparation.
Level 4: ITIL Expert
The ITIL Expert is an advanced accreditation that covers all ITIL disciplines and covers the breadth of knowledge of ITIL procedures and practices. The ITIL Master certification requires the ITIL Expert certification.
To acquire the ITIL Expert certification, you must gain a total of 22 credits by obtaining at least 17 credits from the Foundation, Practitioner, and Intermediate modules, as well as passing the Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) test.
Level 5: ITIL Master
The summit of achievement the capacity to implement the ITIL framework in real-world settings is shown by the ITIL Master certification. All ITIL concepts and procedures covered in the Foundation through Expert certifications are covered in the ITIL Master. An ITIL Master must accomplish the following tasks to demonstrate comprehensive mastery of the ITIL framework:
- Obtain the ITIL Expert designation.
- Provide ITIL experience in a management or leadership capacity for at least five years.
- Suggest a service enhancement.
- Submit a work package demonstrating your ability to apply ITIL concepts to a real-world business case, including benefits to a business service.
- Complete an ITIL assessment panel interview successfully.

The ITIL Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) qualification is a pinnacle credential that an applicant must get before progressing to the ITIL expert level.
The main goal of the ITIL MALC or Expert certification is to learn about the five stages of the lifecycle. Students will fully know the processes at this level, but the training emphasizes isolated settings that drive critical thinking.
Some points about the MALC Exam Format:
- A format of multiple-choice questions of up to 50 questions.
- There are 10 questions for each paper,
- A candidate needs to score 35 out of the possible 50 marks – that’s about 70% marks.
- The exam is a closed-book format
- Exam takes up to 2 hours to complete.
Booking and Appearing for The Exam
Make sure you have confirmed proof of completion of any prerequisites which are the certificate, or a letter from AXELOS confirming you hold a current certification, before booking a test that requires one. Your exam results will be postponed until PeopleCert receives the prerequisite. If you are unable to produce the relevant prerequisite, you will be forced to complete the requirement before the result of the higher-level test can be published.
