The presentation was not smooth. And the data I reviewed and collected had some errors in it. In addition, I realized that I had been careless in studying the materials and numbers provided to me. In my previous job as a Product Analyst for a gaming company, I was faced with a roadblock. The reason behind this was unpredictable market conditions and certain unknown variables. At this point, I struggled with providing a profitable solution to my company. So, to get ahead of my game, I ran a competitor product analysis.

Back then, there was a new brand that joined the market. According to the trends, I noticed that they were garnering a lot of traffic. So, to analyze their products, I began to browse their website and third-party sites to gather more information regarding their products.

Once I found something their customers were not entirely satisfied with, I compared the feature with my company's and found ways to improve it for us. After performing several analyses, I found an opportunity to drive the target audiences back to our company. Thus, we implemented the necessary changes to our product and won the market. After that, my company made me in charge of assessing competitors' marketing strategies regularly. And we made sure that our products were performing well.

Tips -

  1. It does not have to be something big, just something that demonstrates your skills as a Product Analyst.
  2. Walk the employer through the steps you took in the said direction.
  3. Provide some details that focus on your work.

Sample Answer -

In my opinion, there are three ways of evaluating the performance of a product following its launch. The first is to study the sales using a funnel method. When we design a product with a target audience in mind, we have a lead. When the lead purchases the product, they become a consumer. This conversion ratio is a key indicator of how well a product is performing.

The second aspect is user interaction. To assess that, we must look at certain metrics generated by our product in the form of the number of clicks or time on our product's website, a thorough study of the pages viewed, downloads, if any, and email/blog subscriptions made by consumers.

The final measure is customer retention. This data provides useful knowledge of how many users continue to have an interest in our product. Their repeated consumption and feedback help us make improvements and do better.

Tips -

  1. List out the general parameters.
  2. Talk from experience, and don't just give theoretical knowledge.

Sample Answer -

I once worked on a short-term project with a startup company. The company was in its initial stage, and many attributes of incorporation still hadn't made it to the final stage of implementation. So from the very beginning, I was uncertain about my duties. But being a spontaneous person, I attended my meeting with clients without guidance from my supervisors. So naturally, client feedback was the only thing available to me to move forward with my work.

After the first two meetings with the client, I concluded that I aimed to ensure I led their upcoming product launch precisely. First, the client was a technology company, so I ran a competitive analysis of existing products in the market. Next, I tried to understand their promotional activities and integrated the same into my client's product launch.

Thus, even though I did not have any instructions about the task, I navigated my way into the situation, understood the client's requirements, and delivered what was right for the new product.

Tips -

  1. Don't seem over-prepared by answering immediately, but take your time.
  2. Tell them how the scenario had an impact on things beyond your control.
  3. End the answer by saying you took control of the situation regardless of the outcome.

Sample Answer -

Product Analysts assess data using several metrics. But in my experience with performing data quality assessments and analyzing features of a given dataset, four metrics have proven useful. These are accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and accessibility. These attributes are extremely important if the company wishes to get reliable results out of its products.

Tips -

  1. With this, the employer wants to know about your methodology.
  2. Data quality assessment is one aspect of measuring the product's value, so make sure you focus on the attributes you have prior experience working with.

I see two opportunities here. First, I would spend some time conducting extensive research about the company and its history in the market. Second, I would determine the product's performance based on its profit margins and its position in the industry. If all the information I have points upward, I would declare the product effective.

Secondly, if I am told to go about the same without conducting research, I would consult the matter with my teammates. Then, after gathering some data, I would determine the product's behavior by conducting a correlational analysis. Finally, I would create a map of the consumers' trends with the data I have. Eventually, I would be able to evaluate the product's success.

Tips -

  1. Use your experiences in forming your answer.
  2. Try to be intuitive by adding a ‘what if’ situation.

If I am generalizing, since each product is different and is launched in the respective market, it is important to choose the appropriate KPI (key performance indicators) that aligns with the conditions of the game. This is the only way to determine the success of a product launch.

But to be specific, depending upon the company, there are other ways to measure this success also. We can compare the number of downloads or purchases with previous products in a given amount of time. We can scrutinize the same numbers for our competitors. If it is an app, then app store ratings and reviews greatly determine what the users think about the product and if any updates are required.

Tips -

  1. You can never go wrong with an individual approach.
  2. Be clear in explaining your method of thinking and be realistic.

This strategy helped us save a lot of time, and we could determine the scale of our campaigns by dividing our attention to what was more accessible.

Tips -

  1. Talk about the situation at hand, your task, how you acted, and what was the outcome.
  2. Stress on your achievements following the approach.

I think social media works as a wonderful tool for all industries. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have interesting user interfaces. People are so comfortable scrolling through these apps that it is impossible to think of a tactic that would market a product better than social media.

By using algorithmic data, I would try to design a chart that divides users' preferences into different categories. Then, once we know what the users are looking for at a particular moment, we can modify the ad campaign and show them our products.

The next step would be using the interactive data to understand their behavioral patterns and feedback regarding the product. Of course, there are plenty of other ways to utilize social media's widespread existence, and I plan to explore them in my role as a Product Analyst.

Tips -

  1. Good knowledge of upcoming social media features will work as an advantage.
  2. Talk about the marketing strategies you wish to implement for your product and the future scope.

Sample Answer -

I am an extremely stable and straightforward person. When faced with conflict, I stay focused and never let my emotions get the best of me. For example, if a consumer is displeased or dissatisfied with my product, I would stay calm and handle things professionally. Meanwhile, I would try to get to the root of the problem and diminish my client's anger by offering reasonable solutions.

As a Product Analyst, I understand my role is not just limited to product and analytical skills. I am aware of my duties of dealing with customers and actively taking part in customer service needs. So, I try my best to stay prepared if the situation arises. My team-interaction habits and past experiences have given me enough knowledge about marketing and consumer behavior.

Tips -

  1. Show the employer that you are a cool-minded person.
  2. Treat the client with respect.

Sample Answer -

User interaction is like intruding on a user when using an app or a product. The only thing different is that you anonymously ask questions about their preferences. Applying this analogy to testing helps with understanding a user's in-depth nature and what issues, in any, they are facing with a product.

For me, the 'top-down' approach works best when I wish to design an algorithm for testing customer interaction. In my experience, the top-down approach makes it feasible to compartmentalize all the interactions to be weighed and scored. After carrying out the research, I go through the results of this test. And it assists me with building strategies that will fix issues and bring changes to the product.

I believe in keeping things simple. It is very important to maintain simplicity to keep your customers. Since the customer's tastes are constantly changing, we must meet those needs by bringing alterations to our product as a product provider.

A company designs mission statements keeping in mind the organization's purpose in the market. And when you change a particular product feature because it will benefit the customer, you ultimately take a step closer to fulfilling your mission.

If we want to become a leader in the industry, we have to do more than just launch the product into the market. We have to keep track of sales and consumption patterns through research and generate demand in our users by giving them what they want.

Tips -

  1. Try to think out of the box.
  2. Share ideas to generate consumer demand while maintaining the company's goals.

I am glad you asked me this question because I have a 30-60-90 day plan for my responsibilities as a Product Analyst. My first step would be meeting with my supervisor to understand their expectations of me. Then, I will familiarize myself with the working environment and get to know my coworkers. After that, I will start addressing the company's products, study their features, and look at past sales numbers.

Once I am comfortable with my knowledge, I will work toward adding value to my role. For me, the perfect initial project would be breaking down the company's email marketing campaigns and building a tool that tracks them from time to time. In addition, I would also start analyzing consumer data while simultaneously developing project models to reduce any room for errors.

Tips -

  1. Talk about how you will acquaint yourself with your colleagues and different departments.
  2. Know that the prospective company already has a role set aside for you, but an enthusiastic approach will prove you as a worthy candidate.

Choosing a data visualization technique depends on the data type to present. These techniques must be feasible for both large and small data groups. In my years of working in the field, I have used number charts, maps, pie charts, bar and column charts, and gauge charts. To project sales percentages, I have used donut charts. And I must say, they are my favorite in delivering the desired data.

Tips -

  1. Think about your previous experience in conveying data.
  2. Talk about your preferred visualization techniques and why you prefer them.
  3. Use examples if possible.

Facebook and Instagram are currently the leading giants in the marketing industry. Promotional sales have gone up exponentially since the advent of ads and opportunities. About a decade ago, no one would have seen it coming. But today, the platforms promote the growth of products.

While these platforms are interconnected, there is still scope for Facebook users to join Instagram. To allow this, for example, Facebook users could receive a pop-up notification every time one of their friends joins Instagram. So naturally, this would interest them in doing the same.

To enable this, a Product Analyst could implement an A/B test. They can pick some users randomly and group them into a control and test group. Here, the test group will get a pop-up message on Facebook for new Instagram users. At the same time, the control group will not receive any such messages. After the test, we can compare the interaction on the feature by checking the new user sign-up ratio of both groups.

Tips -

  1. This question talks about growth in different domains.
  2. Try pointing out growth analysis and data points which will further align with the company's product hypothesis.

As a part of my preparation for this interview, I have studied your company and your products very carefully. I have looked through your company's history, your founding strategies as well as the needs of your customers. Being a Product Analyst, it is not my place to tell you about general workplace improvements.

However, I think the company would greatly benefit from better advertising. For example, I noticed that one of your products (insert product name) was exceptionally good. The features were at par, and they appeared to function better than similar products in the market. And yet, the company failed to meet the sales expectations.

Upon further research, I realized that the company mainly relied on print marketing and word of mouth. Therefore, I would suggest using social media as a form of internet marketing for future products to ensure the company's products reach the masses.

Tips -

  1. Answers to this question will vary depending on the company, so ensure you have done your research.
  2. Go past what is obvious and suggest changes in things like product launches and marketing strategies.
