PMP Certification Process

PMP certifications are offered by Project Management Institute, Inc. (PMI®), the accrediting body for PMP certification.

KnowledgeHut’s partnership with PMI dates back to 2011 when it became a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.). As a result of meeting rigorous standards for training quality and effectiveness over the years, KnowledgeHut has now achieved Premier Authorized Training Partner (ATP) status with PMI.

You cannot take the PMP exam without undertaking 35 hours of project management education, either as a self-paced e-learning or live instructor-led training from an Authorized Training Partner (ATP) of PMI, like KnowledgeHut.

To fulfil eligibility requirements for the PMP exam, you must fulfill the following:

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:

  • Secondary Degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or global equivalent), OR
  • Four-year Degree (bachelor’s degree or global equivalent), OR
  • Bachelor's or Post-Graduate degree from a GAC accredited program (bachelor’s degree or master's or global equivalent).

PROJECT MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum five years/60 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience, OR
  • Minimum three years/36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience, OR
  • Minimum two years/24 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT EDUCATION

  • 35 contact hours of formal education, unless you are an active CAPM holder.

Some find the application process for the PMP exam to be quite complex. When you enrol for a PMP certification training program with KnowledgeHut, you'll benefit from step-by-step guidance by a KnowledgeHut in-house SME on your PMI® registration and membership as well as your application review and submission. The expert will hand-hold you through the entire process, so that you can focus on what matters - your exam preparation. In addition to this, you’ll also benefit from a 100% money-back guarantee.

Here are the ten steps to get PMP certified:

Step 1: Confirm your eligibility to become a PMP certified project manager before proceeding.

Step 2: Register on the PMI® website, or become a PMI® member and member of your local chapter.

Step 3: Undertake 35 hours of PMP Training from an Authorized Training Partner (ATP) like KnowledgeHut to earn 35 PDUs (PMI’s Education requirement).

Step 4: Check out the PMP classroom training schedules & dates to find a suitable session that meets your requirements.

Step 5: Sign up for the PMP Exam by filling the PMI® application form and submit it to PMI® for approval.

Step 6: Once your online application has been determined to be complete, PMI will send your eligibility code, requesting payment.

Step 7: Pay the credential fee payment ($405 for PMI members; $555 for non-members).

Step 8: Schedule your PMP exam on the PMI® app, my.pmi.org; you can choose to take the exam at a Pearson VUE test center or via the online proctored testing solution.

Step 9: Develop a detailed study plan and study hard; study the PMBOK® Guide thoroughly a few times, as it is one of the primary references for the Exam.

Step 10: Appear for the exam with the required documents and aim for at least 80% or higher (this is a guideline rather than a rigid pass percentage criterion as PMI have not published the pass score in recent times).

You will get detailed information about applying for the PMP exam in PMI’s PMP Handbook. The handbook provides information on all testing modalities, policies and procedures for obtaining and maintaining the PMP certification. You will find tips and important information on the certification process including the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program.

You do not need to earn all 35 contact hours from one project management course. However, it is more structured to acquire all the project management knowledge from a single course that focuses on the latest PMBOK® Guide framework.

Yes, you should have completed the 35 PMP contact hours before submitting your PMP application. Yes. You would need to enter the course details together with the date of completion on the PMP application form before submitting.

The PMBOK® Guide refers to PMI's Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge® , PMI’s flagship publication which is a fundamental resource for effective project management in any industry.

The book includes The Standard for Project Management. The standard is the foundation upon which the vast body of knowledge builds, and the guide serves to capture and summarize that knowledge.

The latest version is the Seventh Edition, published in July 2021.

The PMBOK® Guide is a great resource and an extremely useful one to master project management skills.

Please note that the PMBOK® Guide, 7th Edition does not impact the PMP® Exam Prep Training Material, which has been developed to align to the PMP Exam Content Outline. It is important to note that the current PMP exam is based on the Exam Content Outline, dated January 2021, and not on the PMBOK® Guide. The Exam Content Outline summarizes the research conducted to create the PMP® exam and includes the most critical tasks required for project managers to master in their role.

Yes, you will receive a course completion certificate from KnowledgeHut on successfully completing the course.

The time it will take you to get PMP certified depends on your effort and capability as well as your experience and qualifications. To be eligible for the PMP exam, you need to meet the experience and education requirements, and pass the PMP examination, a 180-question, multiple-choice exam. Along with fulfilling eligibility requirements, professionals typically take between 2 to 4 months to prepare for the exam.

The PMP certification status can be verified via PMI’s Certification Registry. However, inclusion in the registry is voluntary, so not all certification holders may be listed.

To verify a certification holder's status, enter an individual's last name/surname in the search field and a list of matches will be displayed.

Renewing your certification enables you to demonstrate your commitment to continuing professional development. It also demonstrates the value of your knowledge in project management to employers, peers and colleagues.

Below are the steps to renew your PMP certification.

  • Acquire 60 PDUs for every 3-year cycle.
  • Enter your PDUs in the online CCR system (CCRS).
  • Pay the renewal fee according to the instructions mentioned on the renewal reminder notification from PMI.

Ways to earn PDUS;

  • Through education you can earn a maximum of 35 PDUs
  • Giving back to the PMI will get you a maximum of 25 PDUs. Volunteering activities, working as project management professional and generating knowledge are some ways to give back to the PMI.

Professional Development Units (PDUs)

PDUs are Professional Development Units issued by the Project Management Institute®. They can be earned by completing educational training or learning opportunities, which serve to validate your participation and continued proficiency in the principles and practices of project management.

PDUs are the measuring unit used to quantify your professional development as part of the PMI’s Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. 1 PDU = 1 hour of learning/activity.

PDUs recognize your dedication to the project management world through the award of credits for every educational effort you make throughout your career. PDUs are offered by the PMI®, and every PMI certification, except the CAPM®, requires you to earn a specific number of PDUs per three-year certification cycle.

You will be eligible for 35 PDUs on course completion that can be used for recertification from PMI® Inc.

You can earn PDUs by attending training programs offered by PMI Authorized Training Partners or by organizations or universities. Whenever you attend a PMI congress, webinar, conference or any other event or indulge in self-directed learning, you can earn PDUs.

You can start earning and recording PDUs as soon as you earn a PMI certification. Any activities you have completed before earning your certification will not count as PDUs for your newly acquired certification.

Yes, you can transfer PDUs to your next certification cycle if you have earned PDUs above the required total of 60 for PMP, in the last year of your 3-year certification cycle. The PDUs you earned in the first two years cannot be utilized in a future cycle. Further details can be found in the PMP Handbook

No, you do not need to submit any supporting documentation to report new PDUs. However, it is recommended that you keep a folder of all PDU-related documentation handy for at least 18 months post your Continual Certification Requirement (CCR) cycle, so it is readily available should you be randomly selected for an audit.

You can find out more about PDUs in PMI’s FAQs

PMP Audit

The submission of a PMP exam application indicates your agreement to comply with PMI’s terms of the audit process. All applications are subject to an audit, although only a percentage of applications are selected for audit.

The purpose of the audit is to enhance the credibility of the certification programs and maintain the high standard established.

KnowledgeHut is right by your side throughout your certification process. Right from your enrollment for the PMP training program, you will receive comprehensive assistance for PMI registration and membership and review and submission of your PMP exam application.

Should your application get selected for the audit process, you will have 90 days to gather and submit all certificates and documentation to substantiate your project management experience and project management-related education; proper verification for the project experience listed in the application must be provided. A KnowledgeHut expert will guide you through every step to ensure application and exam success. All you need to do is focus on your exam preparation.

You would need to submit:

  1. Copies of your diploma/global equivalent
  2. Signatures from your supervisor(s) or manager(s) from the project(s) recorded in the experience verification section of the application
  3. Copies of certificates and/or letters from the training institute(s) for each course recorded on the application to meet the required contact hours of project management education

You have 90 days to submit the requested documentation. Provided you submit all the necessary documentation to meet the terms and requirements of the audit process, the audit should take just about five to seven business days to complete.

If selected for audit, you may not continue with the certification process until you have complied with the audit requirements. The completed audit forms can be sent by regular postal mail or express courier service, to the address below. All materials must be sent at one time, in one envelope.

  • PMI
  • Attn: Certification Audit
  • 14 Campus Blvd.
  • Newtown Square, PA 19073-3299 USA

If a PMP audit fails, PMI’s Certification Department will take further actions depending on the specific case.

You will need to get a colleague, peer, client or sponsor verify programs and/or projects that you were the manager or supervisor for. The person would need to have sufficient knowledge of the project to be able to verify your project management experience.

No, PMI will retain the documentation submitted as per its internal auditing procedures.

Yes, audit materials are completely confidential, and PMI will not be sharing this with any third parties unless legally required to do so.

You can find more information about the audits in the PMP Handbook

The latest PMP exam was rolled out by the Project Management Institute (PMI®) on January 2, 2021.

The latest (2021) PMP certification exam pattern is as follows:

  • Number of questions: 180 (the previous exam was 200, but the same number of questions will be scored)
  • Time: 230 minutes
  • Breaks: One additional break for a total of two 10-minute breaks for computer-based tests; no scheduled breaks for paper-based exams.
  • Question type: Combination of multiple-choice, multiple responses, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blank. See prototype questions for examples.
  • Difficulty level: The questions are populated as per the difficulty level. The questions are randomized so that no two candidates will get similar questions. The easier the question, the higher the passing score determinant and the higher or tougher the question, the easier the passing score.
  • Domains covered: While the old exam focused mainly on the stages of a project, the new one encompasses everything and everyone involved, namely:

  1. PEOPLE – 42% of items on the exam, emphasizing the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team.
  2. PROCESS – 50% of items on the exam, reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project.
  3. BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT – 8% of items on the exam, highlighting the connection between projects and organization strategy.

The exam will include content that spans the value delivery spectrum, including predictive, agile and hybrid approaches.

You can learn more about the 2021 PMP Exam Content Outline here.

The new examination blueprint detailing the percentage of questions contained in each project management process group is as follows:

  • People: 42%
  • Process: 50%
  • Business Environment: 8%

More details can be found in the PMP New Examination Content Outline – Jan 2021

PMI® rolled out new changes to the PMP exam based on thorough research into how the project management profession has evolved since the last changes made in 2015. Three significant changes include:

1. PMP Exam Format

The new exam is comprised of 180 questions, which need to be answered within 230 minutes (one additional break for a total of two 10-minute breaks for computer-based tests; no scheduled breaks for paper-based exams). Questions will be a combination of multiple-choice, multiple responses, matching, hotspot and limited fill-in-the-blank.

2. PMP Exam Content

While the old exam focused mainly on the stages of a project, the new one encompasses everything and everyone involved, namely:

PEOPLE – 42% of items on the exam, emphasizing the skills and activities associated with effectively leading a project team.

PROCESS – 50% of items on the exam, reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project.

BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT – 8% of items on the exam, highlighting the connection between projects and organization strategy.

3. Exam Preparation

Through its Authorized Training Partners (ATP), PMI is making available its digital resources for exam preparation. When you enrol for KnowledgeHut's PMP training, you will receive comprehensive exam preparation support.

You can learn more about the 2021 PMP Exam Content Outline here.

PMI takes about 5 days to carry out an Application Completeness Review. If selected for the audit process, you will have 90 days to submit your audit materials. PMI processes audit materials within 5 to 7 days.

There is no re-evaluation for the PMP exam. However, if you fail you can attend the exam again. Ensure that you use the remaining two attempts within a year of your eligibility period. If you don’t, you cannot fill the PMP exam application form for a year. If you still fail the remaining two attempts, you have to wait for a year from your last exam attempt before you can re-apply and write the exam.

You can retake the exam if you fail, provided your next attempt is within your eligibility period of 1 year.

If you have already passed the test, you will not be able to take it again to receive a better score.

Your web-based exam results will be visible to you immediately upon completion of the exam.

PMP® Exam & PMP® Renewal

The PMP® certificate is valid for a time period of 3 years. However, it is very easy to renew the certification just by earning PDUs to fulfill the Continuing Certification Requirements or the CCR.

As a member, you will need to earn 60 PDUs to make sure that the requirement for the CCR is renewed along with the PMI certification. The members are also required to earn PDUs on a regular basis so that their PMI certification is active as part of the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR).

Here are the steps required to renew the PMP® certification through the CCR process:
