Lean Six Sigma is a methodology for systematic waste removal from value streams (workflows) by eliminating non-value-adding processes and activities. The IASSC CSSBB study guide is used in conjunction with the Certified Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook for people taking the IASSC Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) test. Below we have mentioned the detailed Six Sigma Black Belt study guide.

Six Sigma is a methodology for improving an organization's competitiveness by concentrating on effectiveness and efficiency. It is a systematic method to issue resolution that focuses on defect removal and variation reduction, resulting in process improvement.

Six sigma is a technique of continuous improvement that focuses on:

  • Empowerment for change
  • Resource training that is seamless
  • Top management's consistent support

Six Sigma is a technique and practice that focuses on designing and delivering high-performing goods and services, and it is a managerial approach and a quality mindset.

What is the Six Sigma Black Belt?

Six Sigma Lean Black Belts are primarily involved in analyzing, structuring, and measuring performance issues. Their responsibilities are considerably different from those of the other Lean teams. Professionals with a Black Belt are expected to manage continuous improvement initiatives and have substantial training in improving results using Lean ideas and sophisticated statistical analysis methodologies. Black Belts in Lean Six Sigma is the primary driver of inspirational decision-making. Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are responsible for leading efforts to minimize variation in processes to improve results and teaching and counseling corporate executives and employees on reducing variation, making better decisions, and improving outcomes. Black Belts in Lean Six Sigma can comprehend all parts of the DMAIC. DMAIC is an acronym for the five steps it takes to improve. Let us understand the DMAIC phases taught in the LSS Black Belt certification.

Define Phase

The DMAIC technique, used with Lean Six Sigma, is the starting point for even Black Belt holders. The Define phase (DMAIC) is the first step in the Six Sigma improvement process and is crucial to the methodology's success. As the name suggests, defining is about explaining the problem and determining the project aim. The Define phase, which lasts about 2 to 3 weeks and starts with selecting a project champion, is based on the project inputs. This phase should involve the Champion regularly to ensure that the team gets off to a good start. The Champion should function as an observer to guarantee that development is satisfactory. He/she should avoid giving precise instructions or offering predetermined solutions.

Objectives of Define Phase

  • Learn about the project, including its goals and objectives.
  • Determining whether the process is suitable for DMAIC or not.
  • Map the ongoing procedure.
  • Customer expectations are detailed.
  • Using project management software, estimating deadlines and expenses.

Measure Phase

The second step of DMAIC is Measure. The primary goal of the Measure phase is to establish a baseline. The Measure phase takes about 2 to 3 weeks, based on the project inputs. The cooperation of all relevant stakeholders is critical in obtaining high-quality data. The goal of the Measure phase is to use data to understand the scope of the problem.

To put it another way, measure the process's performance in its current state to figure out what's wrong. The baseline of the current process, data collection, validation of the measurement equipment, and process capabilities are all part of the measure phase. The Measure phase of six sigma offers a variety of tools and concepts.

Objectives of Measure Phase

  • Calculate the process's baseline performance.
  • Process performance indicators should be identified.
  • Create a data collecting strategy and then start gathering information.
  • System validation
  • Establish the capabilities of the process.

Analyze Phase

The third step of DMAIC is Analyze. The primary goal of the Analyze phase is to find the real root cause of the problem by identifying the probable root cause. To put it another way, let's use the data gathered during the Measure Phase to pinpoint the core issues we wish to address. The project team should thoroughly understand the issue statement throughout the DMAIC measure phase. Six Sigma teams employ various statistical methods to pinpoint the underlying cause in the Analyze phase. Use a data-driven strategy to determine the problem's core cause during the Analyze phase. The Analyze phase takes about 2 to 3 weeks, based on the project inputs. Identification of the fundamental causes requires the participation of all relevant parties. Using statistical methods like hypothesis testing, the analysis phase involves analyzing the process map to enhance efficiency, outlining the likely underlying causes, and finding critical factors or inputs that significantly influence the output. The Analyze phase of six sigma offers a variety of tools and concepts

Objectives of Analyze Phase

  • Use measurement data to figure out what's causing the issue.
  • Using brainstorming, determine the true underlying reason.
  • Determine which fundamental root causes have the most significant influence on CTQ.
  • Use relevant statistical tools and procedures, such as hypothesis testing, to confirm the core causes.

Improve Phase

The fourth step of DMAIC is to Improve. The primary goal of the Improve phase is to find solutions to the problems that were highlighted in the previous three phases of DMAIC. In other words, teams focus on removing root causes and implementing changes throughout this phase. Additionally, create an action plan to track the progress. Six Sigma teams may now make informed judgments to build a solution using the data analysis conducted in the Analysis Phase of DMAIC. Best practices also include performing a pilot to assure success and confirm the results. The primary goal of the Improve phase is to find potential ideas using brainstorming approaches and to produce and choose solutions using the affinity diagram. To begin, pick a set of keys using clarity, duplication, classification, and multi-voting. Then, using must and desire criteria, prioritize implementing those solutions.

DMAIC Objectives of Improvement Phase

  • Determine what remedies are viable for the identified root cause.
  • Using statistical techniques, find the optimal option.
  • Conduct a cost-benefit analysis.
  • Validate the solution to the problem.
  • Assess the solution's efficacy to achieve demonstrable process improvements.

The Improve phase takes about 8 to 10 weeks based on resource availability for executing the solution. Support from senior management is critical in providing the funding and resources needed to implement solutions. The goal of the Improve phase is to identify and prioritize the list of improvements. In other words, they are developing an implementation strategy, performing a pilot project, and assessing the solution's efficacy. In the Improve phase of six sigma, various techniques and concepts are accessible.

Control Phase

A DMAIC process's fifth and final step is the Control phase. Controlling the enhanced process is the key activity in the Control phase. In other words, the control phase ensures that the new process is implemented and does not revert to previous practices. The control phase focuses on putting whatever modifications were decided on in the enhanced phase of DMAIC for the new process into action.

The Control phase's primary goal is to measure the new process characteristic and confirm the improvement. Then put a control and reaction strategy to guarantee that the new procedure is followed to the letter. Develop procedures or work instructions to institutionalize the improvements and hand over the improved process to the operations team.

DMAIC Objectives of Control Phase

  • Create a Control Plan
  • Validate the answer
  • Implementation plan for statistical process control
  • Benefit-cost analysis
  • Finalization of the project
  • Recognize the team's accomplishments.
  • The Control phase takes around 2 to 3 weeks to complete.

The Control phase activities include creating and updating standard works or work instructions. Calculate the money savings and seek the approval of the financial controller. Using control charts, develop and deploy a process monitoring method. Then, to maintain an effective method for monitoring and controlling the process, establish a control plan and reaction. Finally, obtain management permission, update lessons learned, formally end the project, and turn the process over to the process owner. The Control phase of six sigma offers a variety of tools and concepts.
